Summary: “I shouldn’t lurk around here any longer,” Hijikata hummed as he scanned the front of the inn. Tokugawa could see in the harsh glances towards them that the Shinsengumi’s reputation hung like a storm cloud around Hijikata. It was as palpable as the taste of thunder in the throat.
“Then come inside,” Tokugawa spoke with a gentle and unexpected note of want in his voice. He laid his palm on Hijikata’s shoulder and squeezed the sky blue fabric. Apprehension coiled the muscles tight like wire and said nothing to the invitation. Hijikata watched the road and pedestrians, hiding a barely visible clench in his jaw.
The Shinsengumi’s deputy chief has a chance encounter with a charming stranger claiming to be a merchant. ‘Daigo’ offers him an evening away from responsibility.
